Preparing for Lip Augmentation Recovery

Preparing for Lip Augmentation Recovery

Lip augmentations are a popular procedure because they’re relatively quick, don’t cause much pain, and get big results. But like any surgical procedure, lip augmentation has myths surrounding it and  although its a small surgery patients do still need time to recover.

But will you need weeks of bed rest to get back on your feet after a lip augmentation? Read on to find out.

How long does it take to recover from a lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation recovery time depends on which type of procedure you get. It’s also affected by your health and how skilled your surgeon is.

For example, dermal fillers and fat transfers generally take less time to recover than permanent lip implants.

Depending on your procedure, your recovery (as far as returning to normal activities) can take anywhere from a couple days to a few weeks.

Is it easy to manage pain after a lip augmentation?

Pain management is very easy. You may experience mild pain, but patients rarely need prescription pain medication after a lip augmentation—over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen is usually enough.

The other issue to be aware of after your procedure is dryness. You may need to apply a moisturizing or antibiotic ointment to your lips (very gently) for a few days after the procedure to prevent infections and cracking.

What’s the typical recovery period after a lip augmentation?

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all recovery plan for lip augmentations. You and your body are unique. Depending on whether your received dermal fillers or a permanent lip augmentation, your recovery will also vary.

Still, here are some general guidelines:

  • 1 Day: If your procedure was performed without the use of a general sedative, you can resume most normal activities in just one day. If a sedative was used, you’ll need additional time to recover.
  • 1 Week: For at least a week after your procedure, you should avoid exercise. You want to minimize the chances of causing trauma to your lips. You should also avoid alcohol for the first week, as alcohol is a blood thinner.
  • 10 Days: Any sutures created outside your mouth (during a permanent lip augmentation) are removed.
  • 2 Weeks: By now, swelling and redness should be totally gone if you received dermal fillers.
  • 3 Weeks: If you had a permanent lip augmentation, expect an additional week to see redness and swelling disappear.
  • 3 Months: Any lingering stiffness in your lips will disappear.

Ask your doctor about the benefits of each type of lip augmentation—dermal fillers, fat transfer and permanent implants—and discuss the recovery period for each.

When should you seek medical attention after a lip augmentation?

Complications following your lip augmentation are uncommon. But you should seek medical attention immediately if you experience:

  • Infection (including fever)
  • Ulcers, scars, or severe stiffening of the lips
  • Allergic reactions
  • Major swelling
  • Lumps or other irregularities

Choosing an experienced surgeon is one of the best ways you can protect yourself against complications and minimize your risks after a surgery.

Are you ready for a lip augmentation?

Undergoing any kind of surgery—even a ‘minor’ procedure like lip augmentation—is a big decision. Before you make up your mind, be sure to meet with a skilled surgeon to discuss your options.

Remember, a good surgeon will get results. A great surgeon also prioritizes your safety.
